Time is a strange thing.
A song I wrote came to mind
Given the recent events,
But I wrote it in 2017,
My favorite hat,
Served me well for a decade.
What was once white,
Has yellowed with
Sweat and dirt,
Sunscreen caked to the inside brim,
Bleaching the black fabric.
I want a new one,
But I know I cannot replace
What I have.
I want something that is
Simple and timeless.
Something not immediately tied
To a brand,
Or a team.
Movies love to invent
Ways to travel in time.
Most recent
And arguably most famous,
Avengers: Endgame;
Where our heroes go back in time
To the first Avengers movie.
Remember how much you liked that movie?
I think songs are the closest thing we have
To a time machine.
When you hear those sounds,
You are transported back,
To speeding down 1-94,
On the edge of breaking down
Cause she was wrapped up in his arms,
Something you should not have seen.
Why did you go back?
That shit changed everything.
Or you are back in that computer lab,
Hiding tabs, so the teacher wouldn't see,
Turning up the volume in your headphones
Just a bit louder.
Your future self wants to listen in.
Or your in First Ave
By yourself cause your friends
Had something "Better to do"
And your favorite band
Opens with a song that is perfect for
That specific day.
A critique of patriotism and
National duty,
On the day of jingoism,
These are all incredibly specific moments
"In my life
(Did you know that is a Beatles song)"
-My Dad literally half an hour ago.
All these frozen moments in time,
Accessible through the music,
Like a key to a memory.
Those connections remain,
After the hats have been worn out,
After all that time,
You are back in that moment,
for 2-5 minutes.
